Summary

The book explores the comparative experience throughout the world in accommodating cultural diversity. Such policy spheres as decentralization and federalism, electoral systems, education, status and rights of immigrants and indigenous peoples, and affirmative action are examined by a distinguished array of international scholars. In recent years, the saliency of conflicts putting different ethnic, racial and religious groups one against another has increased dramatically. So also has realization that the world of nation-states is much more diverse than previously thought. Only a small number of the 185 independent countries are truly homogenous. With the end of the cold war, the relative importance of ethnic conflicts as a threat to international peace and stability is far greater.
