The sixteen neighbors of the European Union are a very mixedbunch. They range from the oil states of Algeria and Libya towealthy Israel and impoverished Moldova. This group of countries,owing to deep mutual tensions and large geographical distances,either do not or barely talk to each other. The EuropeanNeighbourhood Policy (ENP) aims to promote prosperity inand relations with the neighboring countries of the EU. Thechallenge is to understand the economic situations of this verymixed group of neighboring countries. The emphasis is on theimportance of good trade relations and the supportive role ofthe European neighborhood policy. The volume also examinesdifferences among the twenty-seven member states on a broadspectrum of attitudes and preferences.
