Summary

The Fiat CR.42 Falco represents the peak of the development of the biplane fighter, yet by the time it entered service in May 1939 it was already obsolete. Despite this, it gave sterling service on all fronts in Europe and Africa, particularly during the early years of World War 2. Indeed, it was the Regia Aeronauticas staple fighter in both North and East Africa, Greece and over Malta in 1940-41, during which time its pilots routinely fought against British and Commonwealth squadrons equipped in the main with Hurricanes and Gladiators. A number of Italian pilots claimed their first victories in the Falco, including Mario Visintini, who was the most successful biplane ace of World War 2. Although gradually replaced by more modern fighters from December 1940 onwards, the CR.42 continued to serve in North Africa and the Mediterranean in point defence, convoy escort and ground support roles until late 1942. The CR.42 was also used by the Hungarian, Belgian and Swedish air forces, as well as by the Luftwaffe.

Ludovico Slongo is a promising aviation historian based in the Italian city of Padova. He has been researching the history of military aviation during the World War 2 for more than 15 years, focusing on the Italian Regia Aeronautica.
