The Foundations of Emergency Care is an accessible text that brings together experts from the TVU and the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital to combine coverage of the clinical skills essential for emergency care, with a level of critical thinking that is currently lacking in other texts. It is designed as an easy, readable and 'large pocket sized' companion for EC practitioners that will use an evidence based and protocol driven approach to guide readers through a multitude of common clinical scenarios. Each chapter will include 5-6 scenarios that will use classic emergency care presentations to show how practitioners can apply theoretical understanding of anatomy and physiology to diagnose a patient's clinical status. The scenarios will also introduce critical thinking - a key dimension of the text that sets it aside from competitors.The book is structured around the main foundations of EC, and includes a chapter on each main area. After an introductory chapter on the application of critical thinking in EC, a chapter on Initial Assessment guides readers through the triage process, assessment, physiological shock and the critical thinking framework. From there, the book covers the main areas of EC, and includes chapters on: acute coronary syndromes, minor trauma, major trauma, obstetric emergencies, abdominal emergencies, head injuries, respiratory distress and acute medical emergencies.
