During the 1920s and 1930s, Rex Whistler designed dust wrappers and produced illustrations for books ranging from Beverley Nichols' Down the Garden Path to Isak Dineson's Seven Gothic Tales and including magical editions of Gulliver's Travels, Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, and Walter de la Mere's The Lord Fish. He also produced scores of advertisements, including posters for exhibitions, catalogues for Fortnum & Mason, Imperial Airways leaflets, and for the Guinness brewery Songs of Our Grandfathers Re-set in Guinness Time, with comic versions of traditional ditties. His advertisements for Shell—of which he produced more than 90—resemble comic illustrations in his letters.
