Summary

This new handbook covers the world of biophotonics not only geographically -- with the editors coming from different continents -- but also in terms of content, since the authors come from the whole spectrum of biophotonic basic and applied research. Designed to set the standard for the scientific community, these four volumes break new ground by providing readers with the physics basics as well as the biological and medical background, together with detailed reports on recent technical advances. The Handbook also adopts an application-related approach, starting with the application and then citing the various tools to solve the scientific task, making it of particular value to medical doctors. Divided into several sections, the first part offers introductory chapters on the different fields of research, with subsequent parts focusing on the applications and techniques in various fields of industry and research. The result is a handy source for scientists seeking the basics in a condensed form, and equally a reference for quickly gathering the knowledge from neighboring disciplines. Absolutely invaluable for biophotonic scientists in their daily work.

Table of Contents

First Volume: Basics, Techniques (600 pages) The goal of this volume is to provide a general introduction into the field of Biophotonics i.e. a fundamental coverage of the basic principles in photonics is required. Thus this volume should start with a detailed de-scription of the property of light, of light matter interaction, as well as the necessary optical instrumentation to induce and monitor the linear and non-linear light matter interactions and light matter response. To reach this goal this volume should contain extended contributions of well known textbook authors such as e.g. P.W. At-kins, W. Demtröder, P.A. Tippler, W. Schmidt, Hollas etc. This volume therefore does not so much concen-trate on recent advances in photonic research but rather emphasizes the photonic background being an es-sential prerequisite to understand and appreciate the world of Biophotonics presented in the following two volumes. - Preface: definition of Biophotonics; general introduction; coverage of worldwide research activities in bio-photonics -Fundamentals of linear and non-linear light matter interactions; - Spectroscopy vs. Microscopy - Manipulating matter with light - Basics of optics/photonics and their instrumentation (light sources, optical components, optical instruments e.g. microscope etc.) - Instruments of biotechnology, medicine e.g. endoscopes etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second Volume: Photonics for Health Care Utilizing linear and non-linear light matter interactions specified in the first volume for understanding the ori-gin, for a diagnosis and for a therapy of diseases: - Understanding Life Processes - Innovative analysis, detection and diagnostic methods: Innovative photonic technologies to unravel the secret of life i.e. a comprehensive understanding of the mo-lecular structure and of the inherent dynamical and kinetical processes taking place within biological matter in particular living cells is required. Furthermore chemical reactions and metabolite or bioactive compounds driven functionalities of biological cells as well as cell-cell communication processes need be studied. Based on such knowledge the origin of diseases can be resolved, therapies can be optimized, and the occurrence of diseases might be prevented or at least minimized. - Engaging Life Processes - new photonic micromanipulation tools Laser Micromachining, optical Tweezers and Laser catapulting/ Cell sorting and Cell positioning - Clinical Technologies and systems: optical coherence tomography, laser surgery, biomedical spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging, endoscopic microscopy (optical fibers and sensors), optical and Spectroscopical biochips etc. for: - Photonic diagnostics in dermatology, urology, cardiology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, dentistry, ophthal-mology etc. - Photonic therapeutics: optical methods for tumor treatment, photodynamic therapy, low light therapy etc. - Tissue Optics and tissue engineering ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Third Volume: Photonics for industrial applications Quality assurance in food and pharmaceutical industry - Optical Techniques for Process Analytics and Quality Technology Food Industry/ Agriculture/ Cosmetics - Recent advances in the development of biochips for a accurate, reliable, fast and cost-effective analysis of the quality food and pharmaceutical products - Advances in the field of optical and spectroscopical Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) ----------------------------------------------------------
