Summary

This illustrated history portrays one of England’s finest counties. It provides a nostalgic look at Warwickshire’s past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites. The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England’s archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts.Warwickshire is a diverse and historic county lying in the heart of England. The largest towns, Nuneaton and Rugby, are in the north of the county, but the historic towns of Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon in centre and west of Warwickshire are also important centres. The county was home to heavy industry and coal mining during the Industrial Revolution, much of it replacing the ancient Forest of Arden, although this is now being replaced in turn by new industries. Several canals were built through the county to connect it to nearby Birmingham and Coventry. Stratford-upon-Avon is famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and several buildings associated with him are still standing including his birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s cottage, and many also come to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatres by the River Avon. Other landmark buildings in Warwickshire include Kenilworth Castle and Warwick Castle. For all those who know and love Warwickshire, this book will enable them to discover its remarkable history and variety of places through a fascinating collection of historical photographs.
