The purpose of this book, in its broadest sense, is to find meaning in prayer. In a world where prayer has become void of soul, this book attempts to fill that void. In the process, fundamental thoughts that form the bedrock of Jewish intellectual theory are discussed. This book also draws heavily from sources outside the prayer book, in an attempt to present themes of Tefilla in a sophisticated, scholarly manner while, at the same time, transmitting wisdom in ways that are accessible and inspiring. With this in mind, original texts and more popular works will be presented throughout in an effort to synthesize intellect with emotion, the mind with heart and soul. The varied themes which will be presented in the book yield a work whose style has many different voices. The first section is analytical, discussing the primary goals of prayer; the second section is more conceptual in nature, analyzing why there are specific times and places and text for prayer? The third section covers the theme of spirituality: How does one infuse spirituality into life, into regimented ritual and, more specifically, into prayer? The book has been designed with both learned and less learned readers in mind. To facilitate its usefulness as a guide in learning groups, adult education classes, and private study, all relevant source materials are quoted. They are analyzed and explicated in a manner that hopefully will be accessible to all.
