Excerpts

Preface Human Diseasesis intended to provide students and practitioners of the allied health professions with a grasp of basic information about the cause, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of common diseases. The earlier chapters set forth basic principles, and the later ones discuss, one by one, the bodily systems and important disorders to which they are subject. Rare diseases and arcane, trivial, and controversial issues have been carefully avoided throughout. The order in which the material is presented (proceeding from the general to the particular and from the known to the unknown) rendersHuman Diseasesideal for use as a textbook. Preliminary discussions in each of the later chapters review relevant anatomy and physiology and describe symptoms, signs, and diagnostic measures. Particulars are then given about selected common diseases affecting the system in question. The book can also serve as a quick and convenient reference source. Discussions of specific diseases are self-contained, and can be profitably consulted in isolation from adjacent material. For concise, clear definitions of terms pertaining to disease, a glance at the index will direct the user to the page on which the term is explained, either in context or in one of several specialized glossaries.
