Summary

A firsthand exploration of war and the people who survive it in three of the most war-ravaged countries on earth: Sierra Leone, Chechnya, and Bougainville.

Author Biography

Robert Young Pelton is the author of The Adventurist: My Life in Dangerous Places, Come Back Alive, and The World's Most Dangerous Places, the annual guide to war zones. His early working life included stints as a lumber-jack, a blaster, a fruit picker, a marketing strategist, and a product developer. His goal is to penetrate the least-known corners of the world to understand the motivations of the people who live there. Pelton has traveled with and interviewed the leaders of insurgencies in Chechnya, Algeria, Papua New Guinea, Colombia, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and several other hot spots around the world. Pelton is an iconoclast in the world of adventure. Few things have deterred him from his quest, whether they be a terrorist bomb attack in Uganda, a plane crash in Borneo, artillery bombardment in Afghanistan, a motorcycle accident in Peru, killer bees in Tanzania, exposure in the mountains of Tajikistan, or an Absolut-soaked discussion with Colombian rebels on whether or not he should be kidnapped. None of which interrupted his travel plans. Through it all, Pelton has kept his sense of humor and admiration for the human spirit. Pelton lives in Los Angeles
