Summary

No world region contains so many varied and independent nations as Europe, and yet its well-integrated rail system and the cheapness of international railpasses make the continent easy to explore - not only the must-see cities and landscapes but also the lesser-known delights waiting to be discovered. Independent Travellers Europe by Rail has drawn on the train travel expertise of Thomas Cook to devise a menu of connected rail journeys that take in the best that Europe has to offer, with plenty of recommendations on accommodation, eating and sightseeing to make your travel budget go a long way. Excerpts

Although there's virtually nothing medieval remaining in the centre, Bavaria's sophisticated and cosmopolitan capital is many people's favourite German city. It's easy to see why: the city exudes a sense of space and greenery, and you soon get caught up in the laid-back approach to life, noticeable particularly among the crowds of all ages out enjoying themselves in its many beer halls, pavement cafés and gardens, and in the student haunts and fringe theatres of the Schwabig area. Only the Föhn, a dry wind blowing from the mountains, tempers the local sense of fun.
