Summary

This book deals with the interaction between the Irish and Irish Americans as both groups struggled to create an identity in the turbulent years before and during World War II. Irish leaders in the 1930s and 1940s wanted to create an international identity that would safeguard their new independence and relied in Irish America to help them do so.

Author Biography

John Day Tully is an Associate Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, where he teaches courses on modern Ireland, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and modern America. In 2009 he won the Board of Trustees Teaching Award for the four universities in the Connecticut State University System. He received his Ph.D. in the history of American Foreign Relations from the Ohio State University, where he was also the founding director of the Harvey Goldberg Program for Excellence in Teaching. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College, Dublin, and is currently the Director of Secondary Education for the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations
