Their astonishing journey proved much longer and tougher than they imagined, bringing them unexpected difficulties and delays, including a shortage of food, extreme heat, steep gullies and lashing thunderstorms on the prairies, and freezing cold, impenetrable forests and rushing rivers among the forbidding mountains. Yet on they went, undeterred by hardship and fired by hope.
