The spirit of Charles Dickens still seems to be everywhere in the city's narrow lanes, yet in the banking district, flamboyant skyscrapers soar into the sky. Today, the formidable Tower no longer keeps watch over medieval villains but over the architecturally impressive town hall on the opposite bank of the Thames.
