Author Biography


John M. Najemy, Professor Emeritus of History, Cornell University

John M. Najemy studied history at Princeton and Harvard and held fellowships at the Villa I Tatti in Florence and from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has published two books on Florentine history and essays on Italian authors from Albertano da Brescia to
Castiglione. His previous work on Machiavelli, in addition to many essays, includes a study of the epistolary exchange with Francesco Vettori that surrounded the writing of The Prince (Between Friends: Discourses of Power and Desire in the Machiavelli-Vettori Letters of 1513-1515, 1993), and The
Cambridge Companion to Machiavelli (2010), which he edited. He taught history at Cornell University for forty years until his retirement in 2016.
