Summary

Mexican Highland Cultures: Archaeological Researches at Teotihuacan, Calpulalpan, and Chalchicomula in 1934-35 is an account of the second of Sigvald Linne's major expeditions in Mexico, sponsored by the Swedish National Museum of Ethnography. Teotihuacan would always be the focal point of Linne's excavations, but he was also interested in the cultures of the surrounding regions. Before commencing excavations at Teotihuacan, Linne traveled through the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala on reconnaissance, excavating at Calpulalpan and Chalchicomula. The artifacts and material he gathered provided insights into the connections that Teotihuacan had with the hinterland. At Teotihuacan, Linne excavated a large open area away from the pyramids of the ceremonial center. There he uncovered what is still today the largest and most complex residential compound of the ancient city. His detailed descriptions of the excavated ruin -- called Tlamimilolpa -- and the large quantity of material recovered were unequaled in the 1930s. The Tlamimilolpa house compound remains unparalleled in Teotihuacan history, as Linne's elegant work has withstood the test of time. Book jacket.
