Last year more than 30,000 people directly participated in reenactments of the classic battles of the Civil War, events that drew hundreds of thousands of spectators. Utterly authentic in terms of equipment and costumes (even down to the correct buttons), these events offered photographer Kristoffersen the opportunity to capture on modern film the sweeping scenes of movement and battle that evaded contemporary civil war photographers, whose primitive equipment required completely unmoving, and thus staged, exposures of many minutes. The resulting duotone photographs, 90 of which were selected for this book, along with the accompanying text by Brian Pohanka (of A&E's "Civil War Journal") vividly recreate our history, bringing new realism to moments of our greatest national tragedy.
