When a few passengers discover that the current world chess champion, Mirko Czentovic, is aboard a cruise ship heading from New York to Buenos Aires, a fellow passenger challenges him to a game. Czentovic, an arrogant and unfriendly man to everyone, easily defeats him. However, during the rematch a mysterious Austrian passenger names Dr. B intervenes and to everyone's surprise, helps the game reach a draw. When Dr. B. confides the secret about how he came to possess his extraordinary understanding of chess, the story unfolds into a surprising tale of confinement and psychological obsession.
