Summary

Written by an expert on the Italian intellectual, this study of Pier Paolo Pasolini's relationship with Spanish culture centers on an analysis of his early poetry from the 1940s and 1950s. It was during this time that Pasolini was heavily influenced by Spanish poets such as Antonio Machado, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Luis Cernuda, Federico García Lorca, and Rafael Alberti, as well as by the Catalonian poets writing in their native tongue, while he himself was writing in the Friulian dialect he had learned from his mother. This edition includes an appendix with a selection of poems written by Pasolini under the pseudonym El Juanero, which were written from the Accademiuta academy he founded in 1945 with the objective of finding an absolute language that would be pure enough for poetry, as well as of promoting the Romance languages and cultures.
