Summary

This volume begins with an examination of the theoretical framework of mastery and control as it applies to the study of aging. The contributors then address cultural and social sources of mastery and control involving factors such as social class, education, race, and ethnicity. Further exploration includes the functions of mastery; its effect on coping abilities, and whether mastery influences diverse actions and dispositions such as alienation, social activities, and religious beliefs in older individuals. Finally the practical implications of the concept of personal control are brought into focus.
