Ernest Dowson is an English poet who very much deserves to be discovered. He wrote fine verse. "The Pierrot of the Minute", a short one-act play, with its elegant style, its discreet use of archaisms, is really a masterpiece. It is an allegory on its author's personal story of unrequited love. Aubrey Beardsley drew illustrations for it, Sir Granville Bantock composed an orchestral overture for it.Public-domain facsimile editions of the original printing exist; this edition is the result of a reconstruction, entered by hand on a computer, in order to obtain good print quality, including Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations.The cover image is a photograph of the Temple de l'Amour in Versailles, near petit Trianon, where the story of the play takes place.
