Summary

Population stabilisation efforts in India have largely been conceptualised, implemented, monitored and evaluated independently of the broader social and economic develop-ment processes despite intricate inter- linkages between the socioeconomic and demographic development processes. A two day international conference was organised at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi as a part of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations, to deliberate on the significant body of know-ledge on the linkages between population, health and human resources and socio-economic development, in retrospect and prospect, in India. This book represents synthesis of 26 selected papers presented in the Conference by nationally and internationally eminent scholars. The volume provides detailed account of demographic transition and its consequen-ces for urbanisation and development process in India. It also provides critical appraisal and evolution of population and health policies and paradigm shifts therein and also what remains to be done to achieve an optimum quality of life in India. The themes discussed in this book include: demographic transition and its consequen-ces; population and health policies; fertility, mortality and contraception; maternal and child health; nutritional status and HIV/AIDS; ageing and health insurance; and population growth prospects and its developmental implications. This book being rich in data and technical analysis, will be useful primary source and research tool for social scientists, economi-sts, policy makers, bureaucrats and journalists.
