De sus obras en prosa lo mas destacado es su Carta Prohemio al Condestable Don Pedro de Portugal (c. 1445). La Carta Prohemio, especie de introduccion al conjunto de sus poemas que le envio al condestable Alvaro de Luna (su gran enemigo), es el primer ensayo critico en castellano sobre la situacion de las literaturas castellana, gallega, catalana, francesa e italiana, y tambien la exposicion de su teoria literaria. En su concepcion aristocratica, la poesia no debe ser un mero pasatiempo, sino algo util, de contenidos profundos y trascendentes. Distingue entre poesia sublime, mediocre e infima;la primera solo se expresa en griego y latin.
