Summary

The late 1990s work of the prolific German painter Gerhard Richter is cataloged in this impeccably produced book. Presented are Richter's luminous abstractions, in which the artist, by scraping over layers of paint, seeks a balance between controlling the flow of paint and letting the paint's flow determine the result. Also included are Richter's formidable realist works, in which ordinary scenes often appear purposely blurred. The book features two in-depth essays, by Martin Hentschel and Helmut Friedel, on Richter's work, as well as a catalogue raisonne of Richter's work from 1993 to 98. Born in Dresden, Germany in 1932, Gerhard Richter travelled to Kassel for Documenta 3 in 1959 and was profoundly influenced by the work of Jackson Pollock and Lucio Fontana. In 1961, he moved to Dusseldorf, West Germany, where he studied at the renowned Art Academy. His work has been shown internationally; he is considered one of Europe's foremost painters.
