Summary

Raising a Thinking Preteen shares dynamic, interactive techniques that will help young people recognize and express the feelings they're having--the first step in developing empathy for others, which, as Dr. Shure demonstrates, is integral to the problem-solving process. Preteens will learn to combine these skills with more complex ones, such as understanding mixed emotions and gaining insight into other people's motivations. They will also learn to plan ahead and to realize that resolving conflict is not always easy. Parents will discover skills as well--for example, how turning monologues into dialogues opens the doors of communication to their preteens and lays the groundwork for keeping those doors open.
