Summary

What is the place of an archaic sacred language in post-communist society? Church Slavonic, the iconic language of Russian Orthodoxy, has experienced a revival in the post-Soviet period. Blending religious studies and sociolinguistics and drawing on a wealth of primary sources, this is the first book devoted to Church Slavonic in the contemporary period. It is not a narrow study in linguistics, but uses Slavonic as a passkey into various wider topics, including the renewal and factionalism of the Orthodox Church; the recovery of pre-revolutionary traditions; the articulation of national identity; and the debates about protecting Russia from Western cults and culture. Rather than exploring the revival of Orthodoxy from the standpoint of ecclesiastical politics or church-state relations, this book examines the myths, rituals, texts and discourses that span official and popular religion in post-Soviet Russia. By tracking diverse expressions of the revival - from catechisms to civic monuments, commercial typography to conspiracy theory - the book updates the history of Slavonic whilst illuminating key trends and tensions in post-communist Russia. It will be of great interest to scholars of sociolinguistics and of religion, as well as to Russian studies specialists.
