Summary

Samuel Seabury (1729-96) and Charles Inglis (1734-1816) were the first bishops of the Anglican churches in the United States and Canada respectively. This study compares and contrasts the seminal episcopal ministries of both men. While much has been written on how each man became their church's leader much less has been penned on their ministries as bishops. This work addresses this deficiency. Special emphasis is given to matters of liturgy, polity, and the challenges of asserting episcopal ministry in churches that had not previously possessed bishops.
