Summary

The Seljuks were one of the great dynasties of the late medieval Near and Middle East yet they are often treated as a mere prelude to the history of their more famous kinsmen, the Ottomans. This volume seeks to fill this gap in the historiography of premodern Islam and is conceived as a new standard scholarly resource for those interested in the Seljuk period. The contributions represent some of the most substantive and innovative scholarship on this period to date.The volume is divided into five parts: (i) the dynastic history and ideology of the Seljuks; (ii) the Seljuk city and nomads; (iii) law and legal institutions; (iv) religious unity and diversity; (v) art, archaeology and literature. Each of the chapters is based on original research in the primary sources, shunning an exclusive focus on political and military history and instead employing innovative and interdisciplinary methods to assess this important period of Islamic and Turkish history.

Christian Lange is Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Songül Mecit is art-time Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
