Initiated by the acquisition of the Sovfoto Archive - a collection of photographs produced by the Soviet Union during the Second World War and intended for the American press - this publication includes numerous examples from the collection, two scholarly essays and responses from three contemporary artists. While Johns outlines the role of myths and symbols in the development of the Soviet Union, Black describes how the censorship institutionalized by Stalin operated. The artists - Olexander Wlasenko, Sadko Hadzihasanovic and Robin Pacific - examine the repercussions of propaganda on art and the media.
