Summary

The battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) changed the course of the Civil War. When the fighting Stopped, the casualties totaled nearly 24,000. The stunning Northern victory thrust General U.S. Grant into the national spotlight, claimed the life of Confederate General Albert S. Johnston, and forever buried the stillingering notion that the Civil War might be a short conflict.

Author Biography

About the Author: Edward Cunningham, Ph.D., studied under T. Harry Williams at Louisiana State University. He was the author of The Port Hudson Campaign: 1862-1863 (LSU, 1963). Dr. Cunningham died in 1997. About the Editors: Gary D. Joiner is the author of several books, including the award-winning One Damn Blunder from Beginning to End: The Red River Campaign of 1864 (2003). He teaches history at LSU in Shreveport. Timothy B. Smith is the author of several books, including the awardwinning Champion Hill: Decisive Battle for Vicksburg (2004). A former Shiloh ranger, he teaches history at the University of Tennessee in Martin.
