Sr. Kathleen Rooney reflects on her ministerial journey in the light of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience that she made upon entering her community. She describes the requirements, the opportunities, the work, the rewards, and the challenges of being a sister.

Author Biography

Kathleen Rooney, SSJ, was born in Bayonne, New Jersey. She is an identical twin and has two older siblings. She received her BA in psychology from Rutgers University, New Jersey, and her MA in theology from Saint Michael's College, Vermont. She entered the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia at the age of thirty-three. She has taught religion in high schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and is currently a campus minister at Holy Family Academy, Bayonne, New Jersey. She has taught in adult education programs and in parish RCIA programs in Alaska, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Prior to entering the SSJs, Kathleen was a hospital social worker and assistant director of religious education in Saint Justin's Parish, Toms River, New Jersey
