Tall, with long black hair and olive complexion, she announces that her name is SUSAN, and Dieter is mesmerized. Sy warns Dieter that he is there to work, not to chase pretty waitresses.Dieter does begin his work, but he can't get the girl out of his mind. Back he goes to the same restaurant every night until Susan finally confronts him. "Well? Are you going to ask me for a date or not?" a romance begins, and soon becomes serious. Dieter discovers that Susan is the daughter of CHARLIE and SUNDAY EVERETTE, but Susan tells Dieter she is the daughter of a white man and a black woman, and therefore, also considered black. This, of course, makes no difference to Dieter. Their love deepens and Dieter takes her with him to Lert's workshop, where she learns a lot about music while Dieter shows great promise. With a bright future ahead of him, Dieter proposes and Susan accepts. Engaged, they return to Manteo and Susan arranges a huge dinner so that Dieter can meet her parents.When it comes out that Dieter's actual name is VON HELENBACH, Charlie suddenly stands up and leaves, taking Sunday with him.
