Summary

Bynoe asserts that it is time for the Hip Hop generation to engage in a more sophisticated dialogue about what constitutes leadership, politics and political action. For too long Black leaders have only been 'Charismatic Leaders', and have largely functioned as 'spokespersons' delivering complaints and exhortations. Bynoe is passionate about the need for a new generation of Black leadership and civic and political organizations to actively deliver concrete results because Hip Hop talk is not enough to have a real effect on the current White power structure.

Author Biography

Yvonne Bynoe has written and lectured extensively on politics, culture and economics and how those topics are often framed by popular culture. Bynoe is the author of two books, The Encyclopedia of Rap and Hip Hop Culture, which that chronicles the history of the genre, and Stand & Deliver: Political Activism, Leadership and Hip Hop Culture.
