Summary

The discrete and random occurrence far from thermodynamic equilibrium of chemical reactions, and low copy numbers of chemical species, in single cells necessitate stochastic approaches for modelling. The book focuses on analytical approaches, complementing publications on stochastic simulations. There are numerous existing approaches in this field that describe their formal relationships, helping the novice to survey the field. Throughout the text, a couple of pedagogical examples are revisited to illustrate ideas and methods as they are introduced. Additionally, the cell cycle model is included as a more complex case study. For the advanced reader, a chapter is included at the end which deals with a general Markov process with both continuous and jump character. Mukhtar Ullah is at the University of University of Rostock in Germany, where he is a research assistant in the Systems Biology and Bioinformatics group in the Department of Computer Science. His research is concerned with the stochastic modelling of subcellular biochemical systems. Olaf Wolkenhauer is a founding editor of the first international journal on systems biology (IET Systems Biology, London). His research interests are in data analysis and mathematical modelling directed towards an understanding of cell function. His work concentrates on a systems-theoretic approach to understand the regulation, control and coordination of intra and intercellular processes.
