Summary

Over the course of three decades, Computer Associates grew from a typical tech start-up (in a Greenwich Village loft) to industry dominance, only to fall prey to a corporate scandal. The company has since regained its former prominence and is now reconnecting with its roots, once again becoming a software innovator of distinction. John Swainson narrates the origin of the company from the early friendship between the two co-founders, Charles Wang and Russell Artzt, who met at Queens College, to their trials and tribulations working together after graduation, leading to the birth of CA in 1976. CA grew rapidly through many major acquisitions. By the heady nineties the firm competed with IBM, Tivoli, and HP Openview, but then suffered when the tech bubble burst. A scandal nearly brought down the company, but thanks to new leadership this is a triumphant story of their comeback. CA has returned to the philosophy that made it successful to begin with--innovation and customer service.
