Summary

This first book on this very hot topic introduces SILP materials and the fundamentals, covering ionic liquids, porous supports, syntheses and characterization. It then features a section using various case studies to highlight applications within the catalytic production of bulk chemicals, fine chemicals, environmental processes, biotechnology, energy production and gas separation. In each case, the most pertinent authors available describe here the underlying research. A final section of concluding remarks discusses the perspectives and outlook.

Author Biography

Rasmus Fehrmann is head of the Board of Education at the Department of Chemistry, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and member of the University Council of Education. After obtaining his PhD degree from DTU he was awarded university candidate- and senior scholarships as well as post doctoral fellowships at the Institute of Catalysis, Russia, Universit? de Provence, France, and University of Patras, Greece, before taking up his present appointment. Professor Fehrmann has authored over 110 scientific publications, 4 patent applications, and 200 oral or poster presentations at international conferences, and is board member of the Danish Committee for Chemistry.

Anders Riisager obtained his PhD from Interdisciplinary Research Center for Catalysis and Department of Chemsitry, DTU. Subsequently he acquired a post doc position at RWTH-Aachen/University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany and a Villum Kann Rasmussen post doctoral fellowship at DTU before taking up his present appointment. Associate Professor Riisager has authored 27 scientific publications, 2 patent applications, and 80 oral or poster presentations at international conferences. He has received a nomination for the Degussa European Science-to-Business Award 2006 for SILP materials, and is presently the chairman of the Board of Division of Inorganic Chemistry in the Danish Chemical Society.

Marco Haumann studied Engineering and Chemistry at the universities of Dortmund and Berlin (Germany). After obtaining his PhD degree he spent two years at the universities of Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa), developing novel catalysts in collaboration with Sasol Technology. Since 2003 he is a lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany). His main scientific focus is the development of novel supported ionic liquid phase materials.
