Author Biography

Marvin West followed the Volunteers through boyhood, high school, as a University of Tennessee student, and as sports editor of the school newspaper. He covered the Vols for 24 years as an awardwinning sports writer for the Knoxville News-Sentinel. West was president of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and several times a director of the football writers' national association. He wrote for magazines, spoke at an assortment of sports and civic clubs, and had a syndicated radio show about Tennessee football. Eventually, West became sports editor of the News-Sentinel, then managing editor. He went to Washington in 1985 as national sports editor for Scripps Howard and concluded his professional tour as managing editor of Scripps Howard News Service. He chose early retirement, after just 42 years with the same company, and earned Scripps' first Career Achievement Award. West and his wife, Sarah, reside in Maynardville, Tennessee.
