Summary

University professor Eric Kelman and his wife Deanna are entertaining their friends, the MacKenzie family, at an isolated forest cabin. They discover the murder of a youth leader and the disappearance of her young charges. Police suspect an organization of pedophiles. Two more children vanish while walking home from a school playground. Several weeks later, the aging professor is enjoying an offshore sailing weekend with Walt MacKenzie and his 12-year-old daughter, Laurel. The trio fall victim to the pedophiles, who hijack their boat, cast the two men into the ocean, and kidnap the child. Eric Kelman manages to reach the island where Laurel is being held, only to face overwhelming odds when trying to rescue her and two of the other missing children. In a desperate rush for safety, Eric and Laurel s seamanship is severely tested as the criminals pursue their 30-foot yacht Mayflower through shallow, rock-strewn channels among the islands off the coast.
