The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most influential texts of Hinduism - for many Western readers it is their first introduction to Sanskrit literature. To properly understand the avatar Krishna's teaching it is essential to read the Bhagavad Gita's companion, the Uddhava Gita. Though set down in writing centuries apart, together the texts contain the full teachings of Krishna.
This accessible translation, the first available in the West, uses language that makes the metaphors of Hinduism comprehensible to a Western reader, while remaining faithful to the teaching of the original. Each chapter is prefaced with a short commentary to help the reader appreciate the message of the text. The Uddhava Gita offers philosophy, sublime poetry, practical guidance (such as instructions on how to meditate) and, ultimately, the hope of a more complete consciousness, in which the life of the body better reflects the life of the spirit.
