Askari's work represents the struggle to formulate an Eastern poetics that challenges the assumptions of rational Western thought, and he has provided some profound ways to think and reflect on the damages that colonial subjugation has imposed on selfhood, culture, and literature. Askari is a postcolonial before his time, writing in a language (Urdu) that has not drawn the attention of the Western academy. It exposes the role of language marginalization within academic discussions in cultural and postcolonial studies. This book is an effort to address the problem.

Mehr Afshan Farooqi is an assistant professor of South Asian Literature at the University of Virginia. She is the editor of The Oxford India Anthology of Modern Urdu Literature.
