Summary

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

That’s how things worked in the jungle; everything there was either won or lost by force.

On the La Portuguesa plantation located in the jungles of Veracruz, Mexico, a Spanish family tries to live their lives and get ahead despite the hostile environment that they are forced to live under. The family was constantly being assaulted by bandits, guerrillas, corrupt politicians, or by the Otomies themselves, the natives of that region who felt that those who lived on the farm were intruders on their lands.

Divided in twelve parts, this story narrates the unrestrained, sensual, and magical life in the jungle, with torrential rains and an unbearable heat, always on the verge of an assault, riot, revolution, or disaster of some sort. It’s a story where one day the narrator flies on a hot air balloon and we witness the awakening of a child's sexuality, or the appearance of an elephant abandoned by a circus who then becomes part of the family. Jordi Soler masterfully narrates a territory with its own, rustic and primitive rules.

A world ruled by the basic forces of nature that has managed to survive unharmed, like a deaf force that absorbs all the light.
