Summary

Over the last decade, Venezuela has exerted an influence on the Western Hemisphere, and on global international relations, well beyond what one might expect from a country of 26.5 million people. In considering the reasons for this influence, one must take into account the country's vast petroleum deposits. The wealth these generate, traditionally used to finance national priorities, more recently has been heavily deployed to bolster Venezuela's ambitious "Bolivarian" foreign policy.
