Summary

Dizziness is extremely common, yet all too frequently it is discounted as an unimportant epiphenomenon of some primary disorder, or simply a symbolic expression of anxiety. Previous analyses of dizziness have focused almost exclusively on its medical aetiology, which bears only a limited relationship to the lived experience of people with dizziness and imbalance. Vertigo and Dizziness draws attention to the problem of disorientation and provides a more complete description of the experience.
Every aspect of vertigo and dizziness is considered, including environmental causes of perceptual-motor disequilibrium, neurophysiological links between dizziness and anxiety, cognitive appraisals of disorientation and their behavioural ramifications, and the social significance of instability. The culmination is a wide-ranging exploration of the topic which integrates biological, environmental, psychological and social factors to construct a unique account of dizziness, vividly illustrated by excerpts from interviews with sufferers.
Vertigo and Dizziness will be invaluable to sufferers from vertigo and dizziness (including many people with panic and agoraphobia) and the health care professionals who care for them, such as neurologists, otolaryngologists, audiologists, physiotherapists, hearing therapists and clinical psychologists.
