Summary

Howard Bolan, after having been promoted to Chief of Staff to the President of the United States, viewed the world differently from how the Lindbergh administration did. The president and the American people were obsessed with the idea of not getting involved in another European war even after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Bolan worked surreptitiously to aid the British and learned along the way that Washington, D.C. was an entrenched, dishonest environment. He had decided to take his leave of Washington and accept the California job offer with the emerging aircraft industry. Howard had selected this Sunday, an especially warm, almost spring-like day, to take Mary Jane to dinner at their favorite restaurant and ask her to marry him and share in his new life. As they shared a memorable outing they heard the news that would change the world and alter his plans. He would spend the next years of his life trying to reverse the isolationism and resurrect the depleted armament industry of the United States.
