Summary

The American negroes are the only people in the history of the world. . . . that ever became free without any effort on their own. W. E. Woodward stated this in his biography of General Ulysses S. Grant. Nothing could be farther from the truth as will be seen in this history which will show that the African Americans fighting in the Civil War may have been the deciding factor in determining the outcome.

Excerpts

Soldiers always have had an exquisite way of expressing themselves. This has not changed since Julius Caesar. A good example is a quote from the diary of Private Lord of the 7nd Illinois that I had to read twice before realizing what he was saying. He wrote: I went back to get some more water, and about twenty feet above where I got the water (last night) a man shot through the head lay with his head in the little stream. I called George. We didn't say much. . . . I can't say that I was really sick but I felt queer, and George said he did. George looked sick, and he said I did. We didn't have any coffee that morning and we didn't drink any water.
