Summary

This book discusses adult vulnerability in a range of health, social care and community contexts, through a series of 'thematic' approaches. The distinctive emphasis of the book combines an overview of the social policy context, with a theorised and critical stance on each of the key areas. Issues of equality of opportunity and the position ofminority communities (who may be excluded on multiple domains as a result of the complex interplay of ethnicity/disability/gender/sexuality, etc.) will be addressed in each chapter. This text looks beyond social work practice or legislative focus to unpick core themes and implications for a range of professionals and service providers. The book uses a practical and accessible format to present policy issues in 'digestible' chunks for readers who may be less interested in policy theory than in understanding the issue in practice. This is an ideal book for third-year undergraduate students and Master's students in the fields of community health, education and social care. Contributors: Jill Aitken, David Bailey, Jennifer Burton, Caroline Cole, Jo Edwards, Michael Farquharson, Lalage Harries, Tennyson Mgutshini, Melanie Parris and Kate Potter.
