Summary

Cardiothoracic transplantation is an established therapy for end-stage heart and lung disease. The management of the heart and lung recipients requires regular biopsies for the diagnosis of acute rejection infection and other complications. Histopathologists in cardiothoracic transplantcentres will therefore see these biopsies on a regular basis and this practical and accessible Atlas will help them in accurate diagnosis. The authors have an extensive combined experience of reading heart and lung biopsies and also teaching interpretative skills to others and are therefore aware ofthe important diagnostic difficulties in this specialist area of cardiac and pulmonary pathology. The Atlas will appeal to transplant clinicians for whom an understanding of the role of biopsy in the management of the patients is very important. The extensive coverage of opportunistic infection, post transplant lymphoproliferative disease, reperfusion injury and recurrent disease will also appeal to transplantation pathologists working with other solid organ allografts.
