White Mexican A Novel

Sole Tapia has always considered herself an American, and she doesn't have much interest in her Mexican American cultural heritage, to her mother's dismay. Sole's brother, George, an ardent supporter of Mexican American rights, is also critical of his sister's lack of interest in her culture. Not until she meets Patsy Benavidez, a proud Mexican American woman who becomes her best friend, does Sole begin to see herself in a new light. She recognizes a truth that she has previously ignored: many people will judge her by the color of her skin and will never consider her an American. Then Sole discovers a shocking secret about George that calls into question all that she believes about her background and family.White Mexican is an insightful and sometimes humorous look at racial identity, family traditions, political correctness, DNA analysis, white privilege, colorism, and what makes us who we are culturally and physically.
