Summary

A resident of Gonzales, Texas, in 1835, thirteen-year-old "Little Jake" Greener witnesses the outbreak of the Texas Revolution. Although his father, Jacob, participates in the initial engagement of that war, "Big Jake" remains apprehensive about the ensuing conflict and the effect that it will have on his family and farm. However, he dutifully enlists in a reinforcement expedition that goes to the aid of the ill-fated Alamo.

Suddenly and tragically elevated to the role of "man of the house, " Jake must help his mother, Sarah, and his sisters, Rebecca and Molly, as they join the Runaway Scrape, fleeing from their burning home ahead of the advancing Mexican army. Their flight across Texas takes them to the Lynchburg Ferry at the San Jacinto River, even as Sam Houston's ragtag army arrives there in preparation for its desperate last-ditch battle against Santa Anna. To avenge his father, and participate in the fight for independence, Jake plays a pivotal role in that climactic last battle.
