Summary

As with previous books in the Cameos of the Western Front series, Poets and Pals of Picardy concentrates on the human dimension of the great battles of World War I, in this case in the Somme sector. Because of the great diversity of the British forces during the First World War, this area of the Western Front saw the activities of both the Pals battalions drawn from working-class neighborhoods and some of the famous poets who were inspired by their war experiences.

Poets and Pals is written in the form of a week's tour of the front by Mary Ellen Freeman, an author with deep knowledge of the Somme battlefields as well as modern poetry. For many who have previously seen World War I as a series of mass battles fought by faceless armies, Freeman brings to life the soldiers of varying backgrounds, the scenes of their actions, and the burial places and memorials of those who did not survive.
